It sits on an island called Staffa. The cave is made of basalt columns. These are tall, dark rock poles.

These columns formed from a lava flow. Long ago, the lava was very hot. As it cooled, the rock began to shrink. This shrinking caused the rock to crack. The cracks grew into a pattern of six-sided shapes. These shapes are called hexagons.

Today, we see these long columns in the cave walls.

The cave has a large arched entrance. The sea flows inside it. It is known for its natural acoustics. This means the cave makes unique sounds and echoes.

A composer named Felix Mendelssohn visited in 1829. He was inspired by the echoes. He wrote music called the "Fingal's Cave Overture." Many poets and artists have visited too. You can see the island of Iona from inside.
