Local fishermen first discovered the cave in the 18th century. Since then, it has become a very popular place for tourists to visit.

There are two main ways to reach the cave. You can take a boat trip from the port of Alghero. These trips happen every hour during the summer months. You can also walk down the high Capo Caccia cliffs. A long stairway was cut into the cliff in 1954. These are called the escala del cabirol, or goat's steps. They have 654 steps that lead down to the entrance.

You can only visit when the water below is calm.

Inside the cave, there are many amazing things to see. You will find lit passages filled with rock shapes. These shapes are called stalactites and stalagmites. There is also a long lake made of saltwater. This lake sits at sea level.

The whole cave system is quite large. Experts estimate its total length is around 1 kilometer. However, only about 200 meters of it are open to the public.

Many people visit the grotto during the busy summer season. In August, there might be 200 people inside at once. A guide leads groups along a lit path. These tours last for one hour. The guides speak in English and Italian.

The cave was once a home for Mediterranean monk seals. These animals are now extinct in this area. Other nearby caves include the Green grotto and the Grotta di Ricami. Some divers also visit the famous Nereo Cave nearby.

Neptune's Grotto has even appeared in movies. In 1979, it was used for a science fiction film. The movie was called Island of the Fishmen. It was directed by Sergio Martino and starred Barbara Bach. For about two months in 1978, the cave became a huge movie set.
