The Jeita Grotto is a huge system of interconnected caves. It is located in the Nahr al-Kalb river valley in Lebanon. These caves are very special because they have two different parts.

One part is a lower cave with an underground river. This river is very important for the local people. It provides fresh drinking water to more than one million people in Lebanon. The other part is the upper cave, which is dry and full of stone shapes.

This upper part contains the largest known stalactite in the whole world.

These caves formed through a process called karstification. This happens over millions of years as limestone rock dissolves.

First, rain water picks up carbonic acid as it falls. This acid-filled water flows into tiny cracks in the limestone. The water slowly dissolves the rock, making the cracks much wider. Over a very long time, these wide spaces become large chambers and tunnels. The steep mountains and heavy rain in Lebanon help this process happen faster. The caves now act like a giant tunnel for the underground river.

People have been exploring these caves for a long time. Reverend William Thomson rediscovered the lower cave in 1836. He heard loud echoes from his gun and knew he found something big.

In 1873, engineers and Reverend Daniel Bliss explored even deeper. They found a waterfall they called "Hell's Rapids." They even left their names on a stone pillar called Maxwell's Column. Later, explorers from England, America, and France reached depths of 150 meters. Since 1940, Lebanese explorers have pushed even further into the dark.

Many important discoveries were made by the Lebanese Caving Club. This club was started in 1951 by four explorers.

They discovered the upper galleries in 1958. To help tourists visit safely, workers began digging an access tunnel in 1968. Now, visitors can walk on special paths to see the beautiful stone formations. These formations include stalactites, stalagmites, and even stone mushrooms. The largest chamber in the upper cave reaches a height of 70 meters. The whole system is nearly 2 kilometers long.

Visiting the Jeita Grotto is like stepping into a different world.

You can ride a boat through the lower cave to see the river. In the upper cave, the stone shapes are lit up by bright lights. The caves have even hosted musical concerts in the past. Some people have even used the space for weddings. Because the caves are so special, people must be very careful not to hurt them. They are a wonderful treasure for the natural world.
