The Jenolan Caves are a huge group of limestone caves in Australia. They are located in the Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve. This area is in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. These caves are very special because they are incredibly old. Scientists say they are 340 million years old. This makes them the oldest known and dated open cave system in the world.

Water is the main thing that makes these caves work. A river flows deep underground through the limestone rock. This river creates many different paths and passages. The cave network has over 300 entrances. Inside, you can see beautiful calcite formations. These are shapes made from minerals that can look pure white.

People have known about this place for a very long time. The Gundungurra and Wiradjuri peoples have lived near here for thousands of years. They had many names for the area. They even used the underground water for healing. Later, a man named James Whalan found the caves in 1838. He was actually looking for a thief who had stolen tools and clothes.

Many different people have explored and helped protect the caves. Jeremiah Wilson was the first Keeper of the Caves in 1867. He found many new caves like the Imperial and Jubilee caves. In 1884, the name Jenolan Caves was officially used. The Chifley Cave was very special because it was the first cave in the world to use electric light. This happened all the way back in 1880.
