Film distribution

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Film distribution is the way movies reach an audience. A professional film distributor manages this important task. They decide how to market a film to the public. They also choose which media will be used for viewing. This might include movie theaters or physical items like DVDs. People can also watch through digital downloads or subscription services. These services include names like Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+.

There are many ways a film can be shown. Some people go to a theater to see a feature film. In the past, theaters often showed a "double feature." This included an "A picture" and a "B picture." Today, theaters mostly show movie trailers before the main film. A theater pays a rental fee to a movie studio. Usually, the theater pays about 50% to 55% of ticket sales. This fee often decreases as the movie stays in theaters longer.

Movie history shows how much things have changed. Early theaters were often called nickelodeons. This name came because admission cost a nickel. In 1902, Tally's Electric Theatre opened in Los Angeles. The Nickelodeon in Pittsburgh opened in 1905. Before 1915, there were two main ways to share films. The "states rights" system sold films on a local basis. The "roadshow" system focused on large, famous theaters. Some roadshow films included Cabiria in 1914.

Distributors often use a plan called "release windows." This system helps movies reach different markets at different times. In 1979, movies went to theaters first. Then, they went to pay television. Later, they were shown on free-to-air television. These windows have changed over the years. In the 1960s, the window was over five years long. By 1985, the window was much shorter. Now, many movies move to home video very quickly.

Some companies try a "simultaneous release." This means the movie is available everywhere at once. A viewer can choose the theater or their home. This can save money on marketing for the studio. However, some directors worry this might change the magic of movies. Investor Mark Cuban has said viewers should have this choice. Some movies, like Bubble in 2006, tried this method. Digital services like Amazon and YouTube now play a huge role.
