Film distribution

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Film distribution is how movies reach people. A film distributor is a person or company that does this work. They decide how to sell a movie. They also choose where people can watch it.

In the past, most movies were only for theaters. Some early theaters were called nickelodeons. They cost a nickel, or five cents, to enter. Today, there are many ways to see a film. You can go to a movie theater. You can also watch films at home on a DVD or Blu-ray. Some people use digital downloads or services like Netflix and Disney+. These services let you watch movies through the internet.

Distributors use a plan called release windows. This is a set of steps for when a movie comes out. Usually, a movie starts in theaters first. Later, it moves to home video. Then, it might go on television. Some people try a simultaneous release. This means the movie comes out in theaters and online at the same time. This lets viewers choose how they want to watch.
