These are called independent films. People also call them indie films. These movies are made outside of the big movie studios.

Indie films can be short or long. They often cost much less money to make. This gives makers a way to show their own ideas. They can use their own style.

Famous actors sometimes work on these films. They might take less pay to help. They do this because they love the story. They may also want to work with a director they admire.

Making movies has a long history. In the early 1900s, a group called the Edison Trust controlled most films. Many filmmakers refused to join them. They were called independent. To avoid fees, some makers moved to Hollywood.

Later, famous stars wanted more control. In 1919, stars like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford formed United Artists. They wanted to own their own work. Other groups also fought to keep the film world fair. Today, indie films often play at film festivals. They help bring new stories to the world.
