Independent films are movies made outside the big studio system. People often call them indie films. These movies can be short or long features. They are made and shared by independent companies. Sometimes, major companies help distribute them to theaters.

Indie films often have a special style. They show the unique vision of the filmmaker. They might even have much smaller budgets than big studio movies. This freedom lets creators try new things.

Making an indie film works in many ways. Sometimes, the films start at local or international film festivals. After the festivals, they might go to theaters or stores.

Marketing for these films can be quite limited. However, some can still have very large marketing campaigns. Even famous actors join these projects. They might take much less money to work on them. They do this to support a message or a director.

This helps show talents that big studios might miss.

The history of independence goes back a long time. In 1908, a group called the Edison Trust was formed. This group held a monopoly on making and sharing films. It included big companies like Edison and Biograph. It also included the supplier of raw film, Eastman Kodak.

Many filmmakers refused to join this trust. They were called independent because they stayed outside it. To avoid legal trouble, some moved to Hollywood, California. This was far from the Edison base in New Jersey. The Supreme Court eventually ended the trust's power in 1915.

As the years passed, a big studio system grew. By the mid-1930s, five major studios ruled the industry. These were 20th Century Fox, MGM, Paramount, RKO, and Warner Bros. Smaller companies like Columbia and Universal were also there. There was even a group called "Poverty Row." These were small studios that fought to stay in the business. They worked independently but used similar business methods as the big ones. This era shaped how we see movies today.

Famous stars eventually fought for their own independence. In 1919, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks formed United Artists. They wanted to control their own work and their futures.

Later, a group called the SIMPP was founded in 1941. This group helped protect the rights of independent producers. They fought against the control of the big studios. In 1948, a Supreme Court decision changed everything. It forced studios to sell their theater chains. This helped end the old studio system and opened more doors.
