These events usually happen once a year in a single city or region. People might watch films in a dark cinema or on a giant screen outdoors.

Some festivals focus on specific things like scary horror films or true documentaries. Others might highlight films made by women or films from a certain country. These gatherings are very important for the film industry. They act as launchpads for new filmmakers to show their work. They also help established filmmakers and big studios find new audiences.

There are different ways that films get into a festival. Sometimes, special curators invite the filmmakers to join the event. Other times, programmers select films from many different submissions. These submissions can come from filmmakers, producers, or even sales agents. Some festivals are competitive, which means they give out awards for the best work. Other festivals are non-competitive and just focus on showing movies. Audiences often get to see a movie's premiere months before it is released to everyone else. This lets people discover special films that might be hard to find later.

Many famous festivals have been around for a long time. The Venice Film Festival in Italy is the oldest in the world. It started all the way back in 1932.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival is the longest-running in Great Britain. In North America, the Yorkton Film Festival is the oldest for short films. It was established in 1947. The Cleveland Film Festival in Ohio was also very special. In 1948, it was the first in the U.S. to honor films used for training or travel. These long histories show how much people love sharing stories.

Experts often talk about the "Big Five" most prestigious festivals. These include Venice, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, and Sundance.

The Toronto International Film Festival is the most popular in North America. In the United States, the Seattle International Film Festival is the largest. It regularly shows over 400 films in just one month. There are also huge festivals just for certain types of movies. Sitges in Spain, Fantasia in Canada, and Fantastic Fest in the U.S. are the biggest for horror and fantasy films. Even the San Francisco International Film Festival is very important. It was founded in 1957 by Irving "Bud" Levin.

Film festivals have changed a lot over the years. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many festivals moved to virtual or hybrid formats. This means people can watch films online from home. The film industry is also changing because of streaming options on the internet. Some festivals even focus on specific subjects like human rights or military history. There are festivals that celebrate movies made by many different ethnic groups. For example, the Deauville American Film Festival in France focuses on U.S. movies. Whether online or in a theater, these festivals help us connect through stories.
