The National Film Awards celebrate excellence in the Indian film industry. These awards honor artistic and technical skill in filmmaking. They help people appreciate the many different cultures within India. By honoring films from many regions, they promote national unity. The awards also celebrate the unique languages spoken across the country. Filmmakers feel great pride when their work is recognized.

There are three main ways the awards are given. The first group is for Feature Films, which are full-length movies. The second group is for Non-Feature Films, like documentaries or short films. The third group is for Best Writing on cinema. This honors books and articles about the art of film. Winners in these groups receive a medallion, a certificate, and cash. Some prizes are called the Swarna Kamal, or Golden Lotus. Others are called the Rajat Kamal, or Silver Lotus.

The history of these awards began in 1954. The Government of India created them to encourage Indian art and culture. For many years, a group called the Directorate of Film Festivals ran the awards. They managed the ceremony from 1973 until 2020. Since 2021, the National Film Development Corporation of India has run them. The first awards were presented in 1954. One of the first Best Feature Film winners was Shyamchi Aai.

Each year, a special panel of experts chooses the winners. This panel is called a jury. The jury is appointed by the NFDC. They follow strict rules called the National Film Award Regulations. These rules ensure that the selection process is fair. For example, the director of a film must be an Indian national. Films must also be certified by the government within a specific year. Over 100 films in each category enter the competition every year.

Winning a National Film Award is a very big deal. The ceremony takes place in New Delhi. There, the President of India presents the awards to the winners. This event is followed by a national film festival. At this festival, the public can watch the winning films on screen. One very special prize is the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. It honors someone for their lifetime of work in cinema. This award is named after the man known as the father of Indian cinema.
