The National Film Awards recognize artistic and technical excellence within the Indian film industry. These prestigious honors celebrate the skill required to create meaningful cinema. They aim to encourage the production of films with high aesthetic and technical quality. Furthermore, the awards seek to promote social relevance through storytelling. By highlighting films from diverse regions, the awards help people appreciate the many cultures within India. This recognition helps promote the unity and integrity of the nation.

The awards are organized into three distinct sections. The first section is for Feature Films, which are full-length cinematic productions. The second section is for Non-Feature Films, which include works like documentaries or short films. The third section is for Best Writing on Cinema. This category encourages the study of film as an art form. It honors books, articles, reviews, and studies that provide critical appreciation of cinema. Additionally, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is presented to recognize a lifetime of outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.

Winners receive several forms of recognition for their achievements. Each winner is awarded a medallion, a certificate of merit, and a cash prize. The awards are categorized by the type of prize given. Some categories are eligible for the Swarna Kamal, which means the Golden Lotus Award. Other categories receive the Rajat Kamal, or the Silver Lotus Award. For example, the Best Feature Film category receives the Swarna Kamal. Many regional film categories, such as Best Bengali or Best Tamil Feature Film, receive the Rajat Kamal.

Selecting the winners involves a careful and regulated process. Each year, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) appoints a national panel called a jury. This jury is responsible for selecting the winning entries. It is important to note that neither the government nor the NFDC influences which films are chosen. The jury must follow the National Film Award Regulations, a document of rules released every year. These rules include strict eligibility criteria. For instance, the director of a film must be an Indian national.

Films must also meet specific technical and timing requirements to be considered. To be eligible, a film must be certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This certification must occur between January 1 and December 31 of the relevant year. The category of a film, whether it is Feature or Non-Feature, is decided by the Feature Film jury. Every year, over 100 films in each category are entered and deemed eligible. In cases of co-productions with foreign entities, filmmakers must fulfill as many as six specific conditions to qualify.

The history of these awards began in 1954. The Government of India established the ceremony to honor films on a national scale. The goal was to encourage the growth of Indian art and culture. From 1973 until 2020, the Directorate of Film Festivals administered the awards. Since 2021, the NFDC has taken over this responsibility. The first awards were presented in 1954, with the film *Shyamchi Aai* winning Best Feature Film. Other early winners include *Mahabalipuram* and *Mirza Ghalib*.

The award ceremony is a major national event held in New Delhi. During the ceremony, the President of India presents the awards to the winners. This event is followed by the inauguration of the National Film Festival. During this festival, the public can watch screenings of the award-winning films. The awards cover a vast range of subjects and styles. Notable films like *Lagaan* and *RRR* have won multiple awards. This tradition continues to celebrate the evolving landscape of Indian storytelling.
