The National Film Awards honor great movies in India. They started in 1954. The Indian government created them to celebrate art and culture. These awards help people enjoy films from many different regions. They also help people learn about many languages.

There are three main groups for the awards. The first group is for Feature Films. These are full-length movies. The second group is for Non-Feature Films. These might be short films or documentaries. The third group is for Best Writing on cinema. This honors books and articles about movies.

A special award is named after Dadasaheb Phalke. He is called the father of Indian cinema. This award goes to someone for a lifetime of great work. Winners receive a medal, a certificate, and cash. Some awards are called the Golden Lotus. Others are called the Silver Lotus.

A panel of experts picks the winners each year. They follow strict rules to keep things fair. The ceremony happens in New Delhi. The President of India gives out the prizes. After the ceremony, winning films are shown to the public.
