People often call these venues cinemas in many parts of the world. They serve as businesses where the public pays for tickets to see stories. You might see animated films, big blockbusters, or documentaries on the screen. Sometimes, theaters even show special episodes or the final parts of popular TV series. These places bring people together for shared entertainment and joy.

Watching a movie involves a few important steps. First, a machine called a projector shines light onto a large screen.

This projects the moving images for everyone to see. Next, sounds like music and talking come from speakers on the walls. Since the 1970s, theaters have used subwoofers to make low sounds feel strong. Most modern theaters now use digital projection instead of heavy film reels. This change happened mostly during the 2010s to make things easier.

In 1894, the Holland Bros. opened a Kinetoscope parlor in New York City. This was one of the first commercial motion picture houses. The Skladanowsky brothers also showed movies in Berlin in 1895. Later, the Lumière brothers used a device called the Cinématographe in Paris. These early steps helped lead to the dedicated theaters we know today.

There are many different kinds of movie buildings. Small theaters might only have one single viewing room. Large complexes are called multiplexes, a concept from Canada in the 1950s.

A huge multiplex can have up to thirty different screens! You will usually sit in padded seats on a sloped floor. This slope helps you see over the people in front of you.
