Fertilizer is any material used to give nutrients to soil or plant tissues.

These materials help plants grow much better than they would alone. People use fertilizer to make sure crops stay healthy and strong. It is a very important tool for feeding people around the world. Some fertilizers are organic, meaning they come from natural things like compost or animal manure.

Other types are inorganic, which are made in factories using chemical processes.

Most modern farming focuses on three main nutrients known as NPK.

Nitrogen (N) is vital for growing healthy leaves and stems. Phosphorus (P) helps a plant develop its roots, flowers, seeds, and fruit. Potassium (K) helps stems grow strong and moves water through the plant. Plants also need secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. They even need tiny amounts of micronutrients like iron, zinc, and boron.

Farmers have managed soil fertility since the very beginning of agriculture.

Early groups in the Middle East, China, and the Andes used it to grow. Egyptians, Romans, and Babylonians also used minerals or manure to help crops. In 1837, an Englishman named John Bennet Lawes began experimenting with manures. He patented a way to make artificial manure in 1842 using phosphates. This helped start the large industry for chemical fertilizers we see today.

In the 20th century, new science changed how we make nitrogen.

The Haber process makes ammonia from natural gas and nitrogen from the air. This discovery helped food production grow very quickly during the Green Revolution. In 2021, Asia used 53% of the world's inorganic fertilizers. China was the largest user of each nutrient in the world. It is estimated that synthetic nitrogen helps feed nearly half of the global population.

While fertilizer helps us grow food, it can also affect nature.

If farmers use too much, the extra nutrients can wash away. This is called nutrient runoff, and it can pollute rivers and seas. This can lead to eutrophication, which causes large algal blooms in the water. Making these fertilizers also creates emissions like carbon. To help, farmers use sustainable ways like planting buffer strips to stop runoff.
