It focuses on keeping the earth healthy and full of life. Farmers want to protect the soil and the environment. They also care about fairness and the health of all living beings. This way of farming is often seen as a way to help with climate change. People value it because it promotes food safety and independence.

To make it work, farmers use natural tools instead of man-made ones. They use compost, manure, and bone meal to help plants grow. Instead of synthetic sprays, they might use garlic extract or bicarbonate of soda. They even use pyrethrin, which comes from the Chrysanthemum flower.

Farmers also use crop rotation to keep the soil fresh. This means they change what they plant in each field. They might use companion planting or let helpful insects hunt pests. They do not use genetically modified organisms or growth hormones.

This movement began in the early 1900s as a response to new farming tools. In the mid-19th century, people started using artificial fertilizers. By the 1940s, chemical pesticides became very common. These new tools sometimes hurt the soil or the food supply. Albert Howard and his wife Gabrielle worked in India to find better ways. They studied traditional methods to improve how crops grow. Howard is often called the "father of organic farming."

Organic farming connects many different ideas together. It uses science to study how nature works in a field. This study is called agroecology. It also links to the idea of sustainability, which means taking care of things for the future. Some people also follow biodynamic farming, which sees a farm as a living organism.
