This article covers sensitive topics: climate. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

Regenerative agriculture is a way of farming that focuses on healing the land. It is not just one single method. Instead, it is a collection of many different techniques. These methods aim to make the topsoil healthy and full of life. This way of farming helps the water cycle work better. It also helps nature stay diverse by supporting many living things.

By improving the soil, farms can become more resilient to extreme weather. This means they can handle hard times like droughts or heavy rain more easily. Some people believe this can even help fight climate change. They think it can pull carbon dioxide out of the air and store it in the ground. This process is called carbon sequestration.

Farmers use many specific steps to make this work. One way is by recycling farm waste. They might add compost, which is decomposed organic matter, to the dirt. Another way is called "no-till" or "reduced till" farming. This means farmers do not dig up or turn the soil as much as usual.

This keeps the soil structure strong and helps it hold water. Some farmers also use crop rotation. This is when they grow different types of plants in the same field over time. This can help keep pests away and keep the nutrients in the soil balanced. Another method is sheet mulching, which uses layers of material to smother weeds and add food for the soil.

This idea has been growing for a long time. The Rodale Institute began using the term "regenerative agriculture" in the early 1980s. They even formed the Regenerative Agriculture Association in 1987. In 2002, a man named Storm Cunningham wrote about "restorative agriculture." He wanted to rebuild the quality of topsoil and help local pollinators, like bees. Since 2010, more scientists have studied these ideas in schools. They look at how plants and the environment work together. Many different groups are now working to teach these methods to more people around the world.

Many different places and people are involved in this movement today. In Australia, the Mulloon Institute works to help land hold onto more water. In 2013, Allan Savory gave a famous TED talk about these ideas. Even large companies are joining in now. For example, General Mills started an effort in 2019 to use these methods. PepsiCo and Unilever also made plans to use them in their supply chains. In 2021, the United States government mentioned these practices during a hearing. The government wants to help farmers use tools that keep the soil healthy and store carbon.

Regenerative agriculture connects how we eat to the health of our whole planet. It shows that healthy soil leads to healthy food and a healthy world.

Some groups, like the Sustainable Markets Initiative, were started by King Charles III. They say we must change how we farm to keep the Earth's temperature from rising too much. While some scientists still debate the best ways to define these rules, the goal remains clear. People want to create a system where farming helps nature instead of hurting it. This connection between humans and the Earth is more important now than ever before.
