Manure is a special kind of organic matter used to help plants grow.

It acts as a natural fertilizer for many types of farming. Most manure comes from animal waste, like feces. However, it can also come from compost or green manure. Green manure is when farmers grow specific crops just to plow them into the dirt.

This process adds nutrients back into the soil. It is a way to keep the earth healthy and fertile.

There are many ways that manure works in the soil. It helps the soil structure, which is how the dirt holds together. This helps the ground hold onto more water and nutrients.

Tiny living things like bacteria and fungi eat the organic matter. These small organisms then become part of a soil food web. This web supports even larger living things in the environment. Manure also provides nitrogen to assist with plant growth. Different animals create manure with different qualities for the soil.

People have used animal manure for centuries to help their crops.

Farmers use different methods to spread it on their fields. For example, they might use a machine called a manure spreader. Some farmers use liquid manure, which is known as slurry. This is common in places where animals are kept in intensive systems. In these systems, manure might be mixed with water in large reservoirs. In some areas, farmers even inject liquid manure directly into the soil. This helps to reduce the strong smells that can come from it.

Every animal produces a unique kind of fertilizer. Sheep manure is high in nitrogen and potash.

In contrast, pig manure has relatively low levels of both. Chicken manure is very concentrated in nitrogen and phosphate. Cattle manure is a good source of nitrogen and organic carbon. Horses eat mostly grass, so their manure can contain grass seeds. This happens because horses do not digest seeds the same way cattle do. Even seabirds like guano provide important manure for the earth.

While manure is very useful, it can also bring some challenges. It often has a very strong and unpleasant odor. This smell comes from things like skatole or different acids.

Manure can also carry germs that might make food unsafe. In 2007, a study from the University of Minnesota looked at how antibiotics move through soil. They found that crops like corn and lettuce can absorb antibiotics from manure. Scientists are always looking for new ways to use manure safely. In 2018, researchers in Austria even found a way to make paper from cow and elephant manure.
