Most farmers focus on three main nutrients. We call these NPK. Nitrogen (N) helps leaves and stems grow. Phosphorus (P) helps roots, flowers, and seeds. Potassium (K) helps stems stay strong. 
Using these tools helps grow a lot of food. In fact, synthetic nitrogen helps feed nearly half of all people on Earth.

While fertilizers are necessary for food, they can cause environmental challenges. Excessive application can lead to nutrient runoff, where fertilizers wash into water bodies. This process can cause eutrophication, which leads to harmful algal blooms. Such blooms can create aquatic dead zones in rivers and seas.
