Agrochemicals are special tools used in modern farming. The word is a short way to say agricultural chemicals. These products help farmers grow many kinds of food. Most people use the word to mean pesticides or fertilizers. Pesticides are used to control bugs or other pests. Fertilizers give plants the nutrients they need to grow. Other chemicals can help plants grow or keep them healthy. Some even help animals that live on farms.

There are many ways to use these chemicals on a farm. Farmers might use foliar sprays to coat the leaves of a plant. They can also use root drenches to soak the roots in liquid. Some farmers spread small granules across a field. Another way is to use seed coating on seeds before they are planted. This helps the plant from the very start. These different methods help ensure the chemicals work well.

People have used different ways to help plants for a long time. In the past, farmers used compost and manure as fertilizer. People in Sumeria and China used pesticides thousands of years ago. In the early 20th century, people began making inorganic fertilizers. Production grew a lot during the second half of the 20th century. Many pesticides were developed in the late 20th century. This happened during a time called the Green Revolution.

Making these products requires a lot of science and large factories. Nitrogen fertilizers are made using the Haber-Bosch process. Phosphate fertilizers are made from minerals found in the earth. Most pesticides come from petrochemicals or living things. In 2018, the world used 120 million tons of nitrogen fertilizer. That same year, 44 million tons of phosphorus were used. Canada is the biggest producer of potassium fertilizer in the world.

Using these chemicals can be a hard job because they must be handled safely. If they are used poorly, they can cause pollution. Chemicals can wash into waterways through runoff. Spills can also happen during extreme weather events. Because of this, many countries have very strict rules. Farmers often need permits to buy or use certain chemicals. Some farmers choose other ways to grow food. They might use organic farming or crop rotation to stay safe.
