Agricultural chemistry

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Agricultural chemistry is a special way to study plants and soil. It uses organic chemistry and biochemistry to help us grow food. Scientists look at the way crops and animals are produced and protected. This science helps increase how much food we can grow. It also helps make that food better in quality. This is very important for our growing world.

There are many ways this science works in a field. One way is using pesticides to protect crops. These include herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. They work to keep insects and other animals away from plants. This lets the crops grow without being disturbed by pests. However, these chemicals can sometimes contaminate ground and water. They might also be toxic to birds, fish, or pollinators.

Scientists also study how to keep soil healthy and fertile. They look at minerals and organic matter in the dirt. Fertilizers are a very big part of this work. Some fertilizers come from mining phosphate rock. Others are made using the Haber-Bosch process. These materials help crops grow much faster than before. This helps provide enough food for many people on Earth.

We can even use plants to make fuel. This is called biofuel. Ethanol fuel comes from the fermentation of sugars. Biodiesel is made from both animal and plant fats. We can also get methane from manure or waste. Scientists even use enzymes to make corn sugar into fructose. More than five billion tons of this syrup are made every year.

New technology like biotechnology has changed farming a lot. Scientists create GMOs, which are living things changed at a genomic level. These can be made to grow in new climates. They can also provide new vaccines or more nutrients. Examples include squash that resists viruses or tomatoes that ripen slowly. Since the 1970s, there has been much more interest in this work. In the United States, all foods with GMOs must have a label.
