Fazlur Rahman Khan was a brilliant structural engineer.

He changed how we build very tall skyscrapers. Many people call him the "father of tubular designs." This is because he created a new way to build high-rises. His work helped create "cities in the sky." These are places where many people live and work high above the ground. His ideas made it possible to build much taller than before.

Khan's big idea was the tube structural system. Before him, most tall buildings used heavy steel frames. Khan saw that hollow bamboo in his hometown was very strong.

He used this idea to make buildings act like a giant tube. The outside walls of the building do the heavy work. This helps the building resist lateral loads. These are side forces like strong wind or earthquakes. The tube design makes the building stiff and strong. It also uses much less material, which saves money and helps the planet.

Khan was born on April 3, 1929, in Dhaka.

At that time, his home was in the Bengal Presidency. His father was a mathematics teacher and a textbook author. Khan studied engineering in India and then in the United States. He moved to America in 1952 on a Fulbright Scholarship. He earned two master's degrees and a PhD at the University of Illinois. He later became a partner at a famous firm in Chicago. He worked there for the rest of his life.

Khan designed many famous buildings with different tube styles.

One style is called a trussed tube. It uses X-bracing on the outside to stay strong. He used this for the 100-story John Hancock Center in 1965. Another style is the bundled tube. This joins several tubes together to make a huge structure. He used this for the Willis Tower, which was once the tallest building in the world. It held that title from 1973 until 1998. He also designed the Hajj airport terminal and several stadium structures.

His work is still used in buildings all over the world today. Most buildings over 40 stories use his tube ideas.

He proved that engineers must understand more than just math. He believed engineers should appreciate art, music, and people. To honor him, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat created a special award. It is called the Fazlur Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal. His legacy lives on in every skyline we see.
