It stands on an artificial island built offshore from the beach. A private, curving bridge connects this island to the mainland. The building has a very unique shape. It was designed to look like the sail of a dhow, which is a type of boat. It is one of the tallest hotels in the world.

Building this hotel required many clever steps. First, workers had to create the island from reclaimed land. They drove 230 concrete piles deep into the sand to make a strong foundation. Engineers then placed large rocks in a concrete honeycomb pattern to stop the sea from washing the base away. It took three years just to finish the island. The building itself was built in less than three years. The structure uses over 9,000 tons of steel and a huge amount of concrete.

Many talented people helped design and build the hotel. Architect Tom Wright led the team at Atkins to create the iconic sail shape. He also chose a special fiberglass skin for the outside. This skin acts as a shield against the hot desert sun during the day. At night, it works as a screen for lights. Canadian engineer Rick Kirby helped manage the construction. The inside of the hotel was designed by Khuan Chew. The hotel officially opened on 1 December 1999.

The hotel has many special features for its guests. There are 199 exclusive suites inside the building. Each suite has eight dedicated staff members and a 24-hour butler. One restaurant, Al Mahara, features a massive seawater aquarium. The aquarium holds about 110 cubic meters of water. It uses thick acrylic glass to hold the heavy water pressure. There is also a helipad 210 meters above the ground.

This helipad has hosted tennis matches and even car races.

You might recognize the Burj Al Arab from books or movies. It appears in the spy novel Performance Anomalies and the movie Syriana. It was also a location for the show The Amazing Race. Some people call it a "seven-star" hotel, even though the managers do not use that name. They say the term came from a journalist who was very impressed. The hotel is very popular with travelers from China. It remains a famous landmark in the skyline of Dubai.
