It sits on an island made by people. A private bridge connects the island to the land. The building looks like the sail of a dhow, which is a type of boat.

To build the island, workers drove 230 concrete piles into the sand. They used large rocks to protect the base from the sea. The hotel has 199 suites. A suite is a large set of rooms for guests. Each suite has eight staff members to help.

There is a helipad near the top. A helipad is a flat spot for helicopters to land. It is 210 meters above the ground. People have used it for tennis matches and car races.

The hotel has six restaurants. One restaurant is called Al Mahara. It has a large tank of seawater. The tank uses thick acrylic glass to hold the water pressure. The Burj Al Arab is one of the tallest hotels in the world.
