These rules help people act in ways that a society expects or accepts. It is like a code for being polite and following social traditions. The word itself comes from a French word meaning a label or a tag.

Some people think it is like a ticket that lets you enter society. By following these norms, people can show they belong to a certain group. This helps everyone know how to act when they are together.

Learning etiquette often involves watching and practicing specific behaviors. In the past, people studied how to dress in an elegant way. They also practiced how to have gracious conversations with others.

Some people even learned exactly how to use cutlery at a dinner table. In the Victorian era, these rules became very complicated and detailed. They even covered how to write letters and how to interact in public. Following these steps helped people show respect and maintain social order.

Many famous leaders throughout history helped shape these social rules. Long ago, an Egyptian leader named Ptahhotep wrote about being kind and truthful.

Later, the Chinese philosopher Confucius taught about being sincere in all relations. During the Italian Renaissance, Baldassare Castiglione wrote a book about being a good courtier. In France, King Louis XIV used strict rules to manage his noble followers. He used these ceremonies at the Palace of Versailles to show his power. These leaders used etiquette to guide how people treated one another.

Different people have used etiquette for many different reasons. Benjamin Franklin believed manners should help people cooperate and communicate well. He focused on virtues like humility and sincerity rather than fancy shows. George Washington used a list of 110 rules to train his character. He practiced these rules to learn how to be a respectful leader. In the 1700s, Philip Stanhope wrote letters to teach his son how to be a gentleman. He believed that mastering these manners could help a person move up in society. Each of these people saw etiquette as a tool for life.

Today, etiquette has changed to include the digital world we live in. We now use a term called netiquette for our behavior online.

This means following new rules when we use video calls or emails. For example, keeping your camera on during a call shows you are paying attention. Sending a quick and polite email shows respect to the other person. Just like in the past, these rules help us manage how we act in public. Even though the tools change, the goal of being respectful stays the same.
