A host might offer food, shelter, or safety to a visitor. This can be a way to entertain friends or help a stranger. In many places, hospitality is seen as a great virtue. It is a way to care for others through the ties of humanity. Even today, we see this in how hotels serve their guests.

Many cultures have specific steps for being a good host. In Judaism, the practice is called hachnasat orchim, which means welcoming guests. Hosts are expected to provide food, comfort, and entertainment. At the end, they might walk the guest to the door for a safe journey.

In ancient Greece, guests followed a code of behavior too. This was called xenia, a ritual of guest-friendship. The Greeks believed the goddess Hestia watched over the home and hearth.

History shows that hospitality has always been a deep part of life. In ancient Albania, the Kanun is a traditional law that regulates it. This law says a house belongs to God and the guest. This means the guest is even more important than the master of the house.

During World War II, Albanians used these customs to protect Jewish people. They did not hand them over to the Germans. Because of this, there were eleven times more Jews in Albania at the end of the war than at the start.

Different parts of the world have unique names and rules for this. In India and Nepal, people follow the idea that the guest is God.

The Tirukkuṛaḷ is an ancient Indian book that teaches these ethics. In Islam, kindness to guests is a strong teaching from Muhammad. He even told his followers to treat prisoners of war well. For Chechens, hospitality is part of an ethics code called Quonahalla. This includes being pleasing to the eye, the heart, and being honest.

We can see how hospitality links to many things we know today. In the West, it is often about etiquette or being a good host at a party. It can also be seen in the service of a business. For example, a hotel works hard to provide hospitality to travelers.
