Social conservatism is a way of thinking about politics. It focuses on keeping traditional moral values in a society. Many of these values come from religion. Social conservatives want to protect traditional social structures. They often support things like traditional family roles and gender roles. They also value national pride and religious traditions. These people often prefer the status quo. The status quo is the way things are right now. Because of this, they are often skeptical of fast social change.

This movement grew out of a larger idea called traditionalist conservatism. The main difference is that social conservatism focuses mostly on moralism. This means it focuses on ideas of right and wrong. Some social conservatives support free markets and trade. Others might want the government to step in to help moral goals. In the United States, this group is often part of the Republican Party. Some members focus on religious rules. Other members focus on the right to own guns.

Different countries show social conservatism in many ways. In Canada, these views are common in rural areas. In Australia, some minor parties like One Nation hold these views. Australian leaders sometimes have to balance different ideas. For example, former leader Dominic Perrottet was a conservative Catholic. He opposed abortion but later supported a ban on gay conversion therapy. In 2018, Australia held a big public vote on marriage. Many leaders had to follow what the people decided.

In other parts of the world, these ideas look different. In China, President Xi Jinping has used more traditional views. He has urged women to take on more domestic roles. This is partly because the birth rate in China is low. In India, there is a movement called Hindu social conservatism. It is also known as the Hindutva movement. This group sees Hinduism as a national identity. In South Africa, these ideas were used in the past during Apartheid. The National Party used these views to set many rules for life.

Social conservatism can be found in many political groups. In Canada, the Reform Party was once led by Preston Manning. Later, Stockwell Day became the leader because he was a social conservative. In the Arab world, the Justice and Development Party of Morocco is an example. In Pakistan, there is an alliance of Islamist political parties. These groups all have different ways of following their values. They all show how people try to protect their traditions.
