A reactionary is a person who wants to return to a previous state of society. They believe the past had good qualities that are missing today. In politics, this idea is part of the right-wing side of the spectrum. While conservatives want to keep things as they are, reactionaries want to undo recent changes. They seek to restore a former way of life. Some people use this word as a mean label or a slur. Others, like the historian John Lukacs, have used it to describe their own views.

This idea grew from the French Revolution in the late 1700s. The word comes from the French word for "reaction." During this time, many people wanted to bring back the power of kings and the Church. One group in France was called the legitimists because they supported the House of Bourbon. In the 1800s, reactionaries often looked back to the era before the Industrial Revolution. They liked the old ways of feudalism and traditional social orders. They wanted to bring back the authority of the Church and the State.

History shows many moments where these groups tried to change things back. After the rule of Maximilien Robespierre ended in 1794, a movement called the Thermidorian Reaction took place. This group tried to find a middle path after a very violent time. Later, after Napoleon fell, the Bourbon Restoration brought back a monarchy in France. King Louis XVIII ruled during this period. He dealt with a group of very strict royalists called the Ultras. This group wanted to return society to the ways of the past.

Leaders also worked to stop new political ideas from spreading across Europe. Prince Metternich was the foreign minister of the Austrian Empire from 1815 to 1848. He helped create the Concert of Europe to keep things stable. He worked with the Holy Alliance, which included Russia, Prussia, and Austria. This alliance was meant to protect monarchs against new revolutions. Metternich used the Church as an ally to help maintain order. Even so, many revolutions still shook Europe in the year 1848.

In the 20th century, the word was used in many different ways. People in the Soviet Union used it to label their enemies during the Russian Civil War. Some used it to describe leaders who supported strict or authoritarian rules. For example, the term was linked to regimes in Spain and Portugal. Even Benito Mussolini and the Italian Fascists talked about it. They claimed that fascism was a form of reaction. However, they also argued that their movement was actually a new and revolutionary creation.
