A reactionary is a person who wants to go back in time. They believe society was better in the past. They want to bring back old rules and ways of life.

The word comes from the French Revolution. During that time, many people wanted big changes. But reactionaries wanted to restore the old kings and the Church. They wanted the power of the past to return. One group in France was called the legitimists. They wanted the House of Bourbon to rule again.

In the 1800s, leaders tried to stop new ideas from spreading. Prince Metternich of Austria worked to keep things stable. He used alliances to stop revolutions in Europe.

In the 1900s, the word was used in new ways. Some groups used it as a mean label for their enemies. For example, people in the Soviet Union used it against others. Even leaders like Joseph Stalin used old, strict rules. Some people also used the word to describe leaders who did not like new freedoms.
