He was a master of iconography, which is the study of meaning in art. Instead of just looking at colors, he looked for the stories and ideas hidden in images. He believed that to truly understand a painting, you must also understand the history and ideas of the people who made it. His work helped connect the world of art to the world of big human ideas. Many of his books are still very important to students today.

Learning how to read art was a journey for Panofsky. He did not start by studying art in college. At first, he was a student of law at Berlin University. Everything changed when he heard a lecture about the artist Albrecht Dürer. This talk sparked a deep interest in the history of art. He began to study under many great teachers to learn his craft. He even won a competition for an essay about Dürer's ideas.

Panofsky's early life was filled with culture and learning. He was born on March 30, 1892, in Hanover, Germany. His family was Jewish and they valued education very much. From a young age, he listened to classical music and read great books. He read works by famous writers like Shakespeare and Dante. These books helped him learn how to think deeply about the world. This strong education helped him become a great scholar later in life.

His career faced many hard times due to history. In 1933, the Nazi regime came to power in Germany. Because Panofsky was Jewish, he was dismissed from his job in Hamburg. This was a very difficult time for him and his family. He moved to the United States to find a new life. He taught at New York University and later at Princeton University. He worked very hard to build a new home in America.

Panofsky left a lasting mark on how we teach art. He helped shape the art department at New York University. He also wrote many famous books like "Early Netherlandish Painting." Some of his old papers were even lost for many years. One important manuscript about Michelangelo was finally found in 2012. It was published as a book in 2014. His life shows how art and history are always linked together.
