He was very well known during the Weimar Republic. Gundolf studied many different things at his universities. He studied art history and German language and literature. He attended schools in Munich, Berlin, and Heidelberg. He earned his doctorate in 1903. Later, he finished his habilitation in 1911. This was a special step to become a professor. His work on Shakespeare changed how people studied literature.

Gundolf had a special way of looking at books. He did not just look at the writer alone. He believed great writers were symbols of their time. For example, he studied writers like Shakespeare and Goethe. He wanted to see how their work affected the world. This view was very new and important. He focused on how a poet fits into history. This helped people understand the meaning behind the art.
