Ernst Cassirer was a very important German philosopher and historian. He was born in 1874 in Breslau, which is now in Poland. Cassirer grew up in a Jewish family and loved to learn. He studied many different things like law and math. He also studied history and how people think. He wanted to understand how humans use ideas to see the world.

One of his biggest ideas was about how humans use symbols. In his famous books, he called humans "symbolic animals." He thought animals live mostly by instinct. Humans are different because we use symbols to understand life. We use things like language, art, and myths to make sense of everything. These symbols help us create a world of meaning.

Cassirer spent many years studying and teaching. He studied at several universities in Germany like Berlin and Heidelberg. He also studied at the University of Marburg. There, he learned from a teacher named Hermann Cohen. In 1919, he became a professor at the University of Hamburg. He taught there for many years until 1933.

His life changed when the Nazi regime took power in 1933. Because he was Jewish, Cassirer had to leave Germany. He moved to many different places to find safety. He taught at Oxford in England and in Sweden. Later, he moved to New York City. He taught at Columbia University until he died in 1945.

Cassirer wrote many books that people still study today. His most famous work is called "Philosophy of Symbolic Forms." He also wrote about science and how it works. He believed that using reason helps keep people free. He thought that logic could help fight against dangerous ideas. His work helps us see how culture and science connect.
