He lived from 1874 to 1928. Many people in his time saw him as a leading thinker in Europe. Other famous thinkers like Martin Heidegger even praised him. Heidegger called him the strongest philosophical force in modern Germany. Scheler worked on many different ideas. These included ethics, which is the study of right and wrong. He also studied phenomenology and how humans live.

Scheler had a very busy life of learning. He was born in Munich, Germany. His family was Orthodox Jewish. He later changed his faith to Catholic Christianity in 1901. At first, he wanted to be a doctor. He studied medicine at the University of Munich. Later, he moved to the University of Berlin. There, he chose to study philosophy and sociology instead. He studied under many great teachers. One was Rudolf Eucken, who won a Nobel Prize in 1908.

One of his biggest ideas was about phenomenology. This is a way of looking at the world. Some people thought it was just a strict method. Scheler thought it was more of an attitude. He called it a "spiritual seeing." It is a way to see things that are usually hidden. He believed we cannot see these truths just by watching from the outside. We must have a direct connection to what we are experiencing. This special attitude helps us see the essence of things.

Scheler believed that love is the most important part of thinking. He said that love is a movement of the self. This movement helps us join in a deeper reality. He thought that reason and logic are helpful tools. However, they are not enough on their own. To truly know things, we need the movement of love behind our logic. Love opens our spiritual eyes to see higher values. On the other hand, he said hatred closes our eyes. Hatred can make us miss the good things in the world.

He also created a list to rank different values. He believed some things are more important than others. At the very top are religious values, like what is holy. Next are spiritual values, such as beauty or knowledge. Below those are vital values, like being healthy or strong. The lowest values are sensible values, like being comfortable. He also talked about how values connect to each other. For example, he said that having a good thing is a positive value. He died in a hospital in Frankfurt in 1928.
