He was born in Munich in 1874. He first studied medicine at a university. Later, he switched to study philosophy and sociology. He studied under many great teachers. One was Rudolf Eucken. Eucken won a Nobel Prize in Literature.

Scheler had big ideas about how we see the world. He used a way of thinking called phenomenology. This is a way to look at things as they truly are. He said we must have a special attitude to see the truth. He believed this attitude must be based on love. To Scheler, love opens our eyes. It helps us see the value in things. He said hatred closes our eyes to what is good.

He also made a list of values. He believed some values are higher than others. At the top are religious values, like what is holy. Below those are spiritual values, like beauty or right and wrong. Next are vital values, like health. The lowest are sensible values, like comfort. He died in a hospital in 1928. He was a very important force in modern philosophy.
