Ernst Cassirer was a famous German philosopher. He was born in 1874 in Silesia. He grew up in a Jewish family. Cassirer loved to study many subjects. He studied math, law, and many kinds of history.

He was a great teacher. He taught at a university in Hamburg. In 1933, the Nazi group took power in Germany. Cassirer had to leave his home because he was Jewish. He moved to many places. He taught at Oxford and in Sweden. Later, he moved to New York City. He died there in 1945.

Cassirer wrote many important books. One big idea was about symbols. He called humans "symbolic animals." He said animals use instinct to live. But humans use symbols to understand the world. We use language, art, and myth to make sense of life.

He also wrote about science. He thought about how math and physics work. He believed in using reason. Reason helps people stay free. He wanted people to use logic to find truth. This helped him fight against dangerous ideas. His work is still very important today.
