He studied how to find meaning in art. This study is called iconography. He looked at how old ideas change over time. This helped him understand paintings in a new way.

Panofsky was born in Germany in 1892. His family loved books and music. This helped him learn a lot about history. He went to school to study law. But a teacher's talk about art changed his life. He soon began to study art history instead.

Panofsky worked as a teacher in Germany. He wrote many books about art. He even won an award for his writing. But things became very hard in Germany. Because he was Jewish, he lost his job. He had to leave his home.

He moved to the United States. He taught at New York University. He also worked at Princeton University. He spent his time researching and writing. His books are still read by many people today. He helped shape how we study art in schools.
