He was born in the city of Basel. His father was a church leader. At first, Jacob studied to be a leader in the church too. But he changed his mind. He wanted to study history and art instead.

He went to schools in Berlin and Bonn. He learned how to use old records to tell true stories. This was a new way to study the past. He taught at a school in Basel for many years. He even turned down big jobs at other schools.

Burckhardt wrote many important books. His most famous book was about the Renaissance in Italy. He did not just look at paintings. He looked at how people lived and worked. He showed how art and politics fit together. This helped start a new way to study culture. He also wrote a great travel guide for Italy. People still read his ideas about history today.
