An emir is a title for a leader.

The word comes from an Arabic root. That root means to command.

Long ago, an emir was a military leader. They were often commanders or generals. In some armies, an emir led many soldiers. For example, one rank led 1,000 horsemen. Other ranks led 5,000 or even 10,000 people.

Over time, the title changed. It began to mean a ruler of a small state. Today, it is like the word prince. Some emirs rule over a land called an emirate.

The leaders of Qatar and Kuwait are still called emirs.

Some rulers have even changed their titles. In 2002, the ruler of Bahrain became a king. He did this to show his power under the law.

People also use the name for themselves. Boys may be named Amir. Girls may be named Amira. These names are common in many places.
