A general officer is a top leader in the military. These leaders have a very high rank. They lead large groups of people in the army. Some also lead in the air or at sea.

Different countries use different systems for these ranks. One system is the old European system. It uses the word "general" as a title. In this system, a "full general" is a very high rank. Some countries even use the title field marshal.

Another system comes from the French Revolution. In this way, ranks are named after the group they lead. There is also an Arab system used in the Middle East. This system has its own special names for leaders.

In the navy, these top leaders are called admirals. They are the same level as generals in the army. Some generals also work in other jobs. There are generals for medicine and for building. Even the top chaplain is often a general officer. They help lead many different parts of the military.
