A commodore is a high rank in many navies. They are more senior than a captain. A captain leads one ship. A commodore leads a group of ships. This group is often called a squadron.

In the past, the title was only temporary. It was given to captains who led more than one ship. The Royal Navy used this title in the 17th century. They did this to save money. It was cheaper than making many admirals.

Today, the rank is different in each country. In the United States, it is often a one-star rank. They call this rank a rear admiral (lower half). In the UK, it became a flag rank in 2001. A flag rank is a very high level of leader.

Some air forces also use this rank. They call it an air commodore. It is like a leader for planes. The title is also used in yacht clubs. In these clubs, a commodore is a leader for people who sail for fun.
