A commodore is a senior rank used in many navies around the world. This rank sits above a navy captain but below a rear admiral. In many places, it is seen as a one-star rank. This means it is the first level of a group called flag officers.

A commodore often leads a group of ships called a squadron or a flotilla. While a captain usually commands just one ship, a commodore manages many. They might lead these ships as part of a much larger naval fleet. To show their rank, they often fly a special flag called a broad pennant.

The word itself has a very old history. It comes from the French word commandeur. This was once the second highest rank in groups of knights. In the 17th century, the British Royal Navy used this title for a special reason. It was expensive to appoint many admirals to lead a huge fleet. Using the title of commodore was a way to save money.

At first, it was just a temporary title. It was given to captains when they had to lead more than one vessel. In the Dutch Navy, it was used for temporary jobs from the late 1500s. It did not become a permanent rank there until 1955.

Different countries treat the rank in different ways. In the United Kingdom, the rank became a true flag rank in 2001. Australia made a similar change in the mid-1990s. They even added a star to the rank insignia. In the United States, the rank has a bumpy history. The U.S. Navy stopped using it as an official rank in 1899. However, they brought it back during World War II.

Later, in the early 1980s, the U.S. brought back a one-star rank. They eventually named this rank rear admiral (lower half). This is often shortened to the letters RDML.

Many other groups use the name commodore too. Some air forces use the rank of air commodore. This is similar to the navy rank and is used in places like India and Australia. In the Argentine Air Force, it is a rank equal to a colonel. Even people who sail for fun use the name. Many yacht clubs have a leader called a commodore. These are often the presidents of the clubs.

Some clubs have very formal ceremonies for their leaders. They might use bagpipes, flags, and even a cannon shot to celebrate.

You might see the name in other places as well. In the Merchant Service, it is a title for captains with great skill. During wartime, a convoy commodore might lead a group of merchant ships. This person is responsible for how the whole group moves together. Even some schools use the name. Vanderbilt University has sports teams called the Commodores. This is a nod to Cornelius Vanderbilt, who led a large shipping fleet. It is a title that shows great leadership on the water.
