This rank is usually used for people who command very large ships. In the army, this rank is equal to a colonel. In the air force, it is equal to a group captain. Because they lead such big vessels, they are very important to their fleet.

There are special rules for how to talk to these officers. If an officer is in charge of a ship, everyone calls them "captain" while they are on board. This is true even if their actual rank is lower than a captain. This helps everyone know who is in command of the vessel. However, if a captain is traveling on a ship they do not lead, you should use their rank and name. For example, you would say "Captain Smith." This prevents people from confusing them with the person in charge of the ship.

History shows that these titles have changed over many years. In Portugal and Brazil, the rank is called "captain of sea and war."

This name has roots going back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Long ago, a captain of a Portuguese ship was just called a captain. Later, the term "captain of sea and war" was used for leaders of large ships called ships-of-the-line. When Brazil became independent in 1822, it kept these same names.

Different countries have their own ways of naming and marking this rank. In Canada, they use the name Captain(N) to show they are in the navy.

This helps people not confuse them with army captains. They wear four stripes on their jacket cuffs. In Belgium and the Netherlands, captains also command large ships or shore bases. In Russia, they use names like "captain of the 1st rank." These names help show how much responsibility an officer has.

Captains lead many different types of important equipment. In the Royal Navy, a captain might lead an aircraft carrier. In the United States Navy, they can also lead large air groups.

Some captains lead ships that are the size of cruisers. Even when a very high admiral is on a ship, a captain stays in charge of the actual vessel. This person is sometimes called a "flag captain." This ensures the ship always has a clear leader in command.
