In the navy, it is a specific rank for an officer. This person might lead a large ship like a frigate or a destroyer. They could also lead a submarine or an aviation squadron. In the United States Navy, this is a senior-grade rank. It is known as the O-5 pay grade. This rank sits above a lieutenant commander and below a captain.

Interestingly, it is the first rank where an officer wears a fancy, embellished cap.

In many armies, the word commander is used as a job title instead of a rank. This title tells people which unit a leader is in charge of. For example, a person might be a company commander or a battalion commander. In the United States Army, these titles match specific ranks. A captain might be a company commander. A lieutenant colonel often serves as a battalion commander. The title can also apply to much larger groups. A brigadier might be called a brigade commander.

History shows how this title has changed over many years. In the 18th century, the title was "master and commander." It was used for naval officers on ships that were not too big and not too small. These ships usually had no more than 20 guns. The Royal Navy shortened the name to just "commander" in 1794. In the United States, the rank was called master commandant for a long time. That name changed to commander in 1838.

Different countries use this title in their own ways. In Romania, the rank of commander is used in the air force and the navy. It is equal to the army rank of colonel. In Scandinavia, it is a naval rank used in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. In the United Kingdom, a wing commander in the air force is equal to a lieutenant colonel in the army. Even in the police, the title is important. In London, a commander is a high-ranking officer in the Metropolitan Police.

People use the word commander in places far beyond the ocean or the land. NASA uses the title for space missions. Since the Project Gemini missions, one crew member is named the mission commander. This person is the captain of the spacecraft. They make very important decisions for the crew in real time. They also work closely with the Mission Control Center. In civil aviation, pilots are sometimes called aircraft commanders. This helps show they are the person in charge of the flight.
