An emir is a special title for a leader. It can mean a monarch or a high-ranking official. This title is used in many parts of the world. You might find it in West Asia or East Africa. It is also used in West and South Asia. The word comes from an Arabic root. This root means to command.

In the past, the title was mostly for the military. An emir was often a commander or a general. In some armies, the rank showed how many people a leader had. In Mughal India, an amir led 1,000 horsemen. In Qajar Persia, ranks were even larger. One rank was the Amir Panj, which led 5,000 people. Another rank, the Amir-i-Tuman, led 10,000 people.

Over time, the meaning of the word began to change. It started to describe rulers of smaller states. Today, the title is very similar to the word prince. A person with this title might rule a land called an emirate. Some leaders have even decided to change their titles recently. In 2002, the ruler of Bahrain changed from an emir to a king. He wanted to show his authority under the rule of law.

There are still countries that use this title for their monarchs. Qatar and Kuwait are the only independent countries that do this. In Morocco, the King uses the title Amir al-Mu'minin. This title shows his role in the Islamic faith. Other groups also use the word for their leaders. The Yazidi people have a leader called an emir. In Nigeria, the leaders of northern regions are also called emirs.
