A harem is a private part of a home reserved for women.

This space might hold a man's wife or wives and their daughters. It can also house female servants and other unmarried female relatives. In some families, young sons might live there too. Historically, some harems also included enslaved women called concubines. The way a harem is set up can change a lot. It depends on a family's wealth and their local customs.

How these spaces worked varied between different cultures and times. In many places, the main idea was the seclusion of women. This means women were kept in private areas away from other men. In the Ottoman Empire, some men had only one wife. In late Ottoman Istanbul, only 2.29 percent of married men had more than one wife. The average number of wives was 2.08. In other regions, like parts of Africa, women often worked in fields. This made keeping them in a private space very hard to do.

The history of these private spaces goes back a very long time. The idea did not start with Islam. Many ancient groups in the Near East used similar customs. In ancient Assyria, kings had harems with strict rules. These rules helped prevent arguments among the women. Eunuchs, who were men allowed inside, guarded the space. They also made sure no unapproved visitors entered. In the 7th century BC, the Median Empire conquered Assyria and adopted these customs.

Different empires had their own names and ways of living. In Persian architecture, women's quarters were called the zenana. In India, they were called the zenana as well. In the Ottoman Empire, the women's area was the harem. The area for men was called the selamlık. The Persian word for the harem was related to a place where one spends the night. In the Achaemenid Empire, the queen was very important. She controlled the household, her own staff, and her own lands.

These private spaces have influenced how people see the world today. In the West, many paintings and films show the harem. Some older paintings from the 1500s show these women as powerful people. For example, the Sultanate of Women in the Ottoman Empire showed women with political influence. Today, many women have more chances to go to school and work. This has caused the tradition of seclusion to decline in many places. However, some parts of the world still practice these customs.
