It is a place kept for the women of a family. This space might hold a man's wives and daughters. It can also hold female servants and other female relatives.

In many cultures, the harem was a sign of wealth. It showed a family had enough money to keep women at home. In the past, some women in harems held great power. In the Ottoman Empire, these women helped with politics. This was known as the Sultanate of Women.

Some groups used guards to watch the space. These guards were often men called eunuchs. They were allowed inside the private area. In the ancient Persian Empire, the queen led the household. She had her own staff and lands. She was the mother of the next ruler.
