These baths are part of Islamic culture. They were inspired by old Roman baths.

Hammams were built across many lands. These places included North Africa and parts of Europe.

People used hammams for many reasons. They helped people stay clean. They also helped with religious duties. In the past, many homes did not have plumbing. This made public baths very important.

Hammams were also social places. Men and women had their own times to visit. This let women gather and talk together.

Most hammams have a set of rooms. You start in a room that is cool. Then you move to a warm room. Finally, you go to a hot room.

Furnaces make the heat and steam. This heat travels under the floor. In a hammam, people use running water to wash. Workers may use soap and strong rubbing to clean the skin. Today, some old baths are now museums. Others are still used by local people.
