It uses 28 letters. People write from right to left. This style is called cursive. This means most letters join together in a word.

Letters in Arabic change shape. They look different depending on where they sit. A letter might look one way at the start. It might look different in the middle. It can also change at the end. Some letters even have a special form if they stand alone.

Dots are very important. Many letters have the same basic shape. You can tell them apart by using dots. One dot might go above the shape. Two dots might go below. These dots tell you which sound to make.

Arabic is an abjad. This means you mostly write the consonants. You do not always write the short vowels. Most people use long vowels instead. This can change how a sentence sounds.

Some letters join to make a special shape. This is called a ligature. One famous example is the lam-alif.
