These leaders often came from royal families. They ruled over areas called beyliks. A beylik is like a province or a county. The exact power of a bey changed by place. Some were very powerful. Others held smaller roles.

Many different groups used this title. It was used in Central Asia and the Middle East. It was also used in parts of Europe. In North Africa, the title was also used in Egypt and Sudan. In Tunis, the ruling family used the title Bey. Even in Nigeria, a leader was given the title by the Ottoman Sultan. This helped his family use the name Shitta-Bey.

A woman with this title is called a begum. The word bey is very old. Some scholars think it came from an Iranian word for lord. Others think it is a Turkic word. Today, people still use the word in many ways. In some places, it is a polite name for a man. It is similar to saying "mister."
