Eid al-Fitr is a very important festival for Muslims around the world.

It marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month of fasting. During Ramadan, people do not eat or drink from dawn until dusk. This holiday is a time to celebrate finishing that month. It is one of two main festivals in Islam. The other major festival is called Eid al-Adha. People often call this holiday the "Sugar Feast" because of the sweet foods shared.

The holiday starts when the first crescent moon is seen in the sky.

If clouds hide the moon, the holiday starts the next day. The celebration begins with a special communal prayer. This prayer is often held in a large hall or an open field.

Before the prayer happens, people give money to the poor. This act of charity is called Zakat al-Fitr. It is a way to help those in need. The prayer includes special parts called Takbir. This involves raising hands to the ears and saying "Allahu Akbar." This phrase means "God is the greatest."

Muslim tradition says that Muhammad started this celebration.

A companion named Anas ibn Malik told a story about this. He said that when Muhammad arrived in Medina, he saw people celebrating. Muhammad explained that God had set two mandatory days for festivity. These two days are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. This history shows how the holiday became a regular part of life. It is a tradition that has lasted for a very long time.

Different groups of people follow different steps during the prayer.

In Sunni Islam, the number of Takbirs can change. For example, the Hanafi school uses three Takbirs at the start. Other Sunni schools might use twelve Takbirs in total. In Shia Islam, the prayer steps are also specific. They use six Takbirs in the first part of the prayer. These rituals help people focus on their faith during the festival. The prayer is followed by a sermon called a khutbah.

In Turkey, people call it Bayram. Children might walk from door to door to collect candy or sweets. In Saudi Arabia, families often gather at the home of the oldest male. Adults there may give money to children as gifts. In Jordan, people sometimes hang special lanterns called fanous.

Even though customs are different, the goal is the same. People use this time to strengthen their family and community ties.
