People love them because they bring communities together for racing and festivals. In China, dragon boat racing is a very important tradition. It is even a national holiday called the Dragon Boat Festival. This festival happens around the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year.

People celebrate to honor the dragon, a powerful creature that rules the water and the sky.

Making a dragon boat is a special way to combine different kinds of art. It takes many skilled people working together to build one. Shipbuilders work on the long body of the boat. At the same time, furniture makers use tools like hammers and chisels to carve the dragon's head and tail.

These parts are often made from camphor wood and then hand-painted. The dragon heads look very fierce with big eyes and sharp teeth. The boat's belly has a W-shape to help it stay steady on the water. This clever design helps the boat move smoothly through the waves.

These traditions began a very long time ago in southern China. Some scholars believe they started over 2,500 years ago near Dongting Lake. This was around the same time as the ancient Olympic games in Greece.

In those early days, the boats were part of rituals to ask for rain. Farmers needed rain to help their rice crops grow in the summer. They believed dragons could control the clouds and the monsoon winds. By honoring the dragon, they hoped for a good harvest and plenty of food. This connection to nature made the dragon a respected and kind spirit.

Dragon boats have changed a lot over the years. Before 1911, craftsmen used Ge wood from places like Thailand and Vietnam. Later, they used pine wood from the United States. Since the year 2000, many have used cedar wood from China's Guizhou province.

Today, most racing boats are made of fiberglass or carbon fiber. These materials make the boats much lighter and faster than old wooden ones. Boats come in many sizes, from medium boats at 38 feet to huge ones reaching 90 feet. The longest dragon boat in the world is actually in Cambodia.

A drummer sits at the front to lead the team. The drum beat acts like a heartbeat to keep everyone in rhythm. A steerer stands at the back to guide the boat through the water. Some very large traditional boats can even have more than 50 paddlers! It takes great skill and teamwork to move the heavy boat quickly. Every beat of the drum helps the crew work as one single unit.
